If dealership aren't concerned then I would take the money-back option. You say you still have 6 months Ford warranty left, so this gives you time to source a suitable alternative warranty. You can try the RAC and AA websites, Warranty Direct etc and choose the one that suits you best. In the next 6 months you will also get a chance to find out if you are likely to have a "problem" vehicle.

When I purchased my V6, I took out a Ford Protect Warranty to cover an extra year after the manufacturer's.

I was given documentation to this effect but am now concerned at what john_123 has indicated!

Dally - your're not too bad. I have 2 years 8 months left to run on my 3 year policy! :(

Anyway, reading this initially ruinned my day, but after reading this posted in another thread, things don't seem as bad as I initially thought!

The article inspires some confidence but I suppose we'll have to wait and see!

Hope nothing 'too' drastic happens to your Gal in the next few months.

Cheers.

Dally, at the minute.

Aircon not working - can get it regassed at work for free to see it that fixes it. If not, then into Ford.

Auto gearbox - 2nd --> 3rd gear change just doesn't feel right.

Fuel gauge not always reading 100%.

As you say time will tell - figers crossed for all us out there with extended warranties!!!!!

Hi Jim,

A lot of dodgy changes on the autobox are due to sticking solenoids; this is likely of the quality of the change changes as the box warms up.

A sticky solenoid will eventually result in one or more of the clutches burning out.

However, it's likely that your warranty doesn't cover a solenoid which hasn't completely failed. And if the clutch doesn't completely burn out, the warranty may not cover that either, under "normal wear and tear".

So it might be worth asking a autobox specialist if the solenoids can be inspected or tested fairly cheaply.

Best wieshes,

Yuri.

Thanks yuyir,

The 2nd-->3rd gear change is very ropey at first, with the change initially happening with a bit of a thump - just as if you enganged the clutch very quickly during a manual change.

It does however get much better as the car warms up. The change then feels as if the clutch is slipping on a manual.

All other changes are quick and smooth.

Are these symtpons consistent with what you suggest?

Hi Jim,

Yes, your symptoms are very similar to what I had before my autobox died.

A reconned box later, the changes were still not quite right.

The autobox specialist said the control unit/harness were also duff, and replaced both.

He said that this could have been the primary cause of the solenoid failure, because the solenoids are modulated by the control box and can overheat and warp with bad modulation.

It's probably worth getting a diagnostic check of the control unit also. But even if that cures the problem, the clutches could be in a poor state, so it might be worth having it serviced anyway. And if you have little spare cash, also get a transmission cooler fitted (~

Re Ford Protect Warranty, all valid claims are being honoured 100% by the insurer, NIG.

The Admin Company, Warranty Holdings, went into Administrtion recently, but as the scheme was insured, no policy holder will have an issue.

Ford have now relaunched Ford Protect as an "in House" warranty for used cars.

It covers wear & tear of covered parts (rare in a warranty), cat convertors, in car entertainment etc.

If your local dealer does not subscribe to this scheme, probe why before buying. There are a lot of warranties out there which do not cover half as much as this one.
